Some roofing configurations are more prone to ice damming problems than others. Ice damming occurs when snow and ice collect in a certain area of the roof (often the eaves and valleys). Melting snow on the upper portion of the roof cannot drain properly, as it is trapped behind the ice dam. If the dam is large enough and sufficient water collects, it will back up under the shingles and leak into the eaves, or worse, into the exterior walls or the building's interior.

Why You Need to Remove Snow & Ice

Poor attic ventilation, inappropriate structural design for our climate, and inadequate attic insulation can cause snow to melt and ice to form at the lower eaves of the roof. The initial ice barrier will cause additional water to pool at the eaves, which could travel under the shingles to cause winter leaks. Additional cold weather can create a larger ice dam, which travels up the slope of the roof and creates further damage once warm weather arrives.

Ice damming can cause winter leaks, structural damage to your home, shingle deterioration, wood underlayment rot, and dangerous falling snow and ice. The roof structure is not meant to support exceptionally high amounts of weight caused by heavy snow or ice accumulation.

Solutions

Effective solutions to ice damming problems include increased attic insulation and ventilation. These 2 measures reduce the air temperature in the attic so that it is less likely for snow to melt over the heated portions.

It is recommended that mid-winter clearing of snow from the eaves and valleys, skylights, chimney, and roof vents be completed before ice damming occurs. Also, at the time of the re-roofing, eaves protection (ice and water shield) should be provided beneath the shingles for a distance of at least 2.5' beyond the interior of the exterior wall.
